Not an ingrown toenail?

I had or have what I thought was a ingrown toenail but the podiatrist says its not and that I have a corn down the side of my nail. How is that possible?

DocPod 		It is very common. A true ingrown nail is when a corner of the nail penetrates the skin and sets up some inflammation. A corn or callus develops anywhere there is too much pressure. The skin thickens in response to that pressure and then becomes so thick it is painful. This can occur anywhere on the foot if there is high pressure. The can be pressure between the edge of the nail plate and the nail groove that can cause a corn or callus to form there. This is technically called onychophosis. Onychophosis is probably more common than an ingrown toenail. Both occur down the edge of the nail and both a painful.
Treatment is the regular removal or the thickened corn or callus or perhaps a minor surgical procedure to remove the edge of the nail if its an ongoing problem.
