The role of foot orthoses in rheumatoid arthritis management ?

Rheumatoid arthritis remission- Do foot orthoses actually affect 'disease activity' or are they just preventing progressive deformity and associated pain. I'm confused because when I look at papers on the affect of FOs on RA, they seem to link the number of swollen and tender joints and perceived pain to the foot orthoses.. but doesn't RA occur in periods of activity and remission regardless?

I do not think that foot orthotics affect the disease activity, but may affect how comfortable the foot is in response to the level of disease activity, so that is probably why it is measured.

Orthotics have three roles in the foot affected with rheumatoid arthritis:
1. To try and control the rate (or even prevent) any foot deformity that develops as part of the rheumatoid arthritis
2. To make the foot more comfortable when it is more painful due to the rheumatoid arthritis
3. To offload painful calluses and nodules

Unfortunatly the designs that are needed for each of those roles are sometimes different.
