Unavoidable hammer toes?

67 yo male. I self diagnosed metatarsalgia...persistent foot pain ball of the foot, possibly associated with hiking. I tried everything (different shoes, antioxidants, trip to podiatrist) - problem disappeared when second toe deformed to a hammer toe. Two years later, same problem other foot. Problem went away when 3rd toe "went hammer". Not very happy with my feet - numbish toes, inflexible (arthritis?). Comment from a professional?
