I have a bad callous looking thing on the plantar surface of my fifth metatarsal that is extremely painful. I work in produce at a store and walk an average of 9 miles a day, making work very painful. How do I get rid of this and what exactly is it?
Calluses develop whenever the ongoing load on an area is high. The skin then thickens to protect itself (like the calluses you get on your had if you chop a lot of wood)
The long term management of this is to reduce the load. You either get some of the bone removed surgically or use an insole or foot orthotic with a cavity in it to offload the callused area.
The short term measure is to have a podiatrist debride it ... however, it will happen again unless something is done to reduce the load.
