I had an ingrown toenail, I tried salt bathing daily but it only continued to get worse. After a while, it got very infected with a white mark underneath the surface of the nail. So I went to the doctors. The doctor informed that it could be a fungus, but she wasn't sure. So I went a got samples tested, the results came back saying it was indeed a fungal infection. So I was given a topical treatment for my nail...however the treatment given was for a skin infection and therefore made no difference to the fungus. I used the treatment for about 6 months.
During that time my nail infection only worsened, getting thicker and thicker and getting more discoloured every day. After while my toenail became very flaky and eventually completely falling off altogether. Now it has been about 8 or more months since I have seen any real growth on my bare nailbed.
Is there no hope? Should I just find methods of hiding my nail? Or is there still a possibility that it could grow back and be healthy once more?
They nail can grow back, but that will depend on how much damage has been done to the growing area of the nail by the infection. It is hard to predict.
